SUBMERGED WEEDS
Terrapin Aquatics ManagementThe health and quality of any aquatic ecosystem largely depends on the proper management of aquatic plants present in that body of water.
Terrapin Aquatics will design a plan to manage native (beneficial) plant growth and, at the same time, discourage or eliminate the growth of non-native or invasive weed species (Eurasian Watermilfoil). Properly managed, aquatic vegetation provides habitat and protection for wildlife in and around the body of water. Allowing the desired plants to be healthy will create an overall better aquatic ecosystem.
Floating Weeds
These weeds float on the surface. Some are rooted on the bottom of the pond and some species are free-floating. Common floating plants that may be desirable are American pondweed and water lily. Duckweed and watermeal are free-floating weeds and are considered undesirable. Terrapin Aquatics will properly identify the weeds present and create a management plan to help maintain or eradicate nuisance weeds.
Helpful tips and best management practices for Aquatic Plants:
- learn to identify plant types to distinguish between native and non-native species
- do not rake weeds out of the body of water
- the majority of submerged weeds reproduce by fragmentation.
- integrate a 3-5 foot minimum buffer zone around pond
do not feed or encourage others to feed unwanted waterfowl
