ALGAE
Terrapin Aquatics ManagementNuisance algae blooms (pond scum/green slime/moss/ pea soup) most commonly occur during the warm summer months due to an overabundance of nutrients found within the body of water.
Phosphorous, nitrogen, light levels, pH, and temperature are all contributing factors when it comes to algae growth. The more nutrient enriched, the body of water, the more likely algae is to grow.
Our management programs, including bi-monthly inspections provide frequent onsite visits allowing us to quickly respond to potential nuisance algae blooms.
Any concerns between our scheduled visits will be addressed immediately by contacting us at: info@terrapinaquatics.com or by calling 1-630-423-1417
Helpful tips and best management practices for reducing Algae Growth:
- do not allow grass clippings to fall into pond
- avoid the use of –phosphorous-based fertilizers
- Phosphorous negatively impacts the ecological balance of aquatic plants
- do not spread fertilizer within 15 feet of pond’s edge
- integrate a 3-5 foot minimum buffer zone around pond
- do not feed or encourage others to feed unwanted waterfowl
